What Happens to JibberJobber When the Economy Recovers Lets say there is this awesome day when we are not unemployed, the economy is smokin hot and no one is in job search. (like that will happen, even when things are good, they wont be good) What happens to JibberJobber then?  Here are some options: We lose all our users and we go away We get more users. I dont think the economy will ever recover to a point where there are not people who are unemployed.  People will continue to enter the workforce, get fired, get laid-off, get Enroned (you know, what happened to the people who used to work at Enron), be affected by shifting products or industries, etc.  Somehow, things will happen that are out of our control where we find ourselves on the street, looking for a job. But lets say that utopia really does happen, and there really is no unemployment.  In that world I can image people will still need to have and nurture relationships to help them move to where they want to be.  This could be a lateral move to another company (or within their own company), or a promotion.  Or maybe their circumstances changed and they are ready for less responsibility how do those changes happen? The same way they happen now: through who you know, who knows you, and what they know about you. That, my friends, is JibberJobber. Not to mention you could continue to use JibberJobber to organize and manage non-professional relationships (family, friends), and make sure you nurture those relationships. JibberJobber never has been a band-aid solution to help you just get your next job.  Jobs come and go. Your long-term career is what this is all about. Not using it yet?  Today is a great day to get started! However, because this kind of financing option is risky for the banks lending the money, rates aren’t very good (you might have to pay 20% interest for example), and you can only get one if you have a strong credit score. Credit cards A credit card can be a great way of getting access to money if you need it before your next paycheck  arrives. It works by letting you spend money on credit up to a pre-set amount, which could be anything from a few hundred pounds to several thousand pounds. It can be a relatively low risk alternative finance option if you’re the kind of person who will make sure they never miss paying off the credit card bill every month. Don’t withdraw money from a cash machine using it either, as it might charge you 4% or more to do so.   And bear in mind that this is only going to be an option if you have a good credit rating and are able to debit the required amount into it. Logbook loans Logbook loans allow you to put an asset into the hands of a creditor such as your car in exchange for cash.   So long as you repay the loan and the interest in the manner agreed between you and the lender, you’ll get your car back and have benefitted from the money you needed. Logbook loans aren’t suitable for everyone, and some lenders are more responsible than others, but it can be a good option for people who are excluded from finance due to a poor credit rating. Or, those who can’t go down a conventional route such as borrowing from a bank. 10 Questions Job Candidates Should Never Answer In the United States, there are employment laws in place enforced by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; a federal agency that administers and enforces civil rights laws against workplace discrimination. This does not stop employers from misbehaving during the hiring process. If you are a job candidate and hear one of these 10 questions, you don’t have to answer.1. What Religion/Church/Faith Do You Belong To?Unless you are a faith-based organization, this question will potentially lead to discrimination on the basis of religion. Therefore, it is no good. Interviewers should be focusing on your skills in an interview. Your faith has nothing to do with your ability to perform a job.2. Will You Need Health Insurance?First, everyone needs health insurance. The company is allowed to tell the job candidate that a position does not offer benefits,. But they are not allowed to ask if the job candidate needs it or ask about a job candidate’s health. The question itself can i s an attempt to pry into a job candidate's medical history. It could eventually lead to disability discrimination.3. Do You Have Any Disabilities?Thisquestion is the more direct version of question #2. The Americans With Disabilities Act protects job candidates from disability discrimination. Asking this question can be seen as an attempt to discriminate.4. We Went to the Same College. What Year Did You Graduate?Watch for the questions in which someone can do some basic math and figure out your age with the answer, for example by knowing the year you graduated. Typically, students get their Bachelor's between 22 to 24 years old.Age Discrimination will become a new hot topic in the next ten years as people in the workforce retire later than ever before. Avoid all questions that can give hints as to your real age.5. You Have a Beautiful Accent. Where Were You Born?Regardless of everything going on in the US today, and the crackdown on undocumented workers, companies are not allowed to discriminate based on national origin. Thisproblem is not just a US problem. Anywhere you go in this world you come across people in countries who discriminate against others for various reasons.6. Any Crazy Interview Question With No Real Answer or PurposeThe purpose of interviews is to evaluate job candidates and their skills for performing jobs. Questions like, “What would you do if a penguin walked in front of the door?” have no real answer. Some, but not all, crazy interview questions do not evaluate the job candidate's ability to perform a job. Therefore, the question can be considered a form of discrimination; using questions that cannot be answered to get rid of job candidates.7. Tell Me About Your KidsYou may be ok with answering this as a proud father or mother. But the employer is trying to find out if your kids will affect productivity on the job. You cannot discriminate against people for being parents or the number of children they chose to have.8. Are You Married ?This question may lead to an employer discriminating based on marital status. Being married or a parent has nothing to do with a person’s ability to perform tasks. It may not seem like a big deal if you are happily married, but shallow-minded employers who believe “married people are less devoted to the job or less productive.” It is also a question that can lead to the accidental disclosure of religious faith.9. How Old Are You?Employers are allowed to ask if you are older than 18. But they cannot ask your age. The question can is as an attempt to age discriminate.10. Were You Ever Arrested?The US is a country with a legal system that believes in “innocent until proven guilty.” Employers are allowed to ask if you had been convicted of a felony (proven guilty). However, the company cannot ask if you had ever been arrested (innocent until). So, it is illegal for employers to ask this question.Final NotesEvery job candidate is allowed to fully disclose answers to questions that may lead to discrimination. But the job candidate will assume every consequence in doing so. Given we now work in a global economy, if you are hired in the USA and your company is based in another country, you should investigate if the EEOC is still able to protect you. Research the employment laws of the company overseas. You might not have the discrimination protection you receive in the USA.

Turkish QA - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Im speaking at an HR conference in Istanbul next month, a leading turkish newspaper wanted to do an interview by email about happiness at work. They sent me some great questions, which I answered as best I could. The best part about great questions is that they leave you and the questioner wiser. Below are the questions and my answers, which contain some of our basic thoughts on happiness at work. 1.How and why did you start an create the Happy at Work Project? I come from a background in IT, where Ive been a consultant, leader and business owner. In 1997 i co-founded an IT company called Enterprise Systems, which grew to be both a great financial success and a place where people were very happy to work. In 2002 we sold our company and I decided to leave the IT business. After some time I realized that what Im really passionate about is creating happy workplaces. I took the best experiences from Enterprise Systems and refined them, and this became the Happy at Work Project which I founded formally in October 2003. 2.What is the project?s situation today? How has it grown since its begining? The project has been a huge success. Among our succeses are: Lectures, which we have held at many, many danish workplaces The Happy at Work board game, which we created last year, and which is being used in many organizations to learn about happiness through playing Our conferences. In May 2004 we held the worlds first conference about happiness at work, and we repeated the event in June 2005. Financially were doing very well and our customers are very happy about the things we do. 3.For what reasons are people unhappy at their work places in general? Is there any way of elimination of this unhappiness? Do those people realize that they are unhappy? Is there a concept of ?acccepting the unhappiness?? The main reason people are unhappy at work is bad leadership. Im sorry to say it, but many leaders are not good enough at recognizing the needs of their people. A typical situation sees a person taking a job because the content is interesting ? and leaving it because they dont like the manager. Other typical causes of unhappiness are: A lack of praise and appreciation Not feeling that you make a difference Stress and working too much Interpersonal conflicts at work Some people accept being unhappy at work. To them, work may just be a way to get money, so they can be happy in life, and that is fine too. As long as you truly accept that. However, the tendency today is that people want more out of work. They want to be challenged and enjoy themselves. Fewer and fewer people work just for the money. And of course many people dont realize that theyre unhappy at work or they dont realize that things can be different. Just a few decades ago nobody expected happiness at work, we all expected work wo be hard, dangerous and unpleasant ? which is why we got paid for it. Fortunately this is changing rapidly. Actually an even more interesting question is: What makes people happy at work? and some of the most important factors are: A good manager Being able to make a difference, so you can feel proud about your job Nice colleagues Notice that salary and benefits are NOT on the list. A salary is what makes people show up at work, but it does NOT make them happy. Trying to make people happy by paying them more does not work. 4.Which companies you work with concerning this project? Could you give us examples of what you have changed in these companies by applying ?Happy at Work Project?? We have worked with companies such as Lego, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, IBM, Novo and many others, big or small, private or public. Our focus is on making each person take responsibility for their own happiness. We must all ask ourselves: What can I do to make myself and others happier at work? What we do is give people at these organizations: Knowledge and inspiration Practical, simple tools that they can use to make themselves and others happy Energy and motivation to do something about it We see people themselves take action and start improving their work situation. We do nothing, we only give them the tools. 5.What kind of costs are there when mutually people are unhappy about their company and vice versa, the companies are unhappy about their people? Unhappy organizations are paying huge costs. These costs take many forms, but some of the most expensive are: Higher absenteeism Higher employee turnover and therefore more time and money spent on recruitment Less ability to attract and retain the best employees Lower productivity Lower quality More errors Lower customer satisfaction Less creativity and innovation More conflict and complaining Think about it: Who will leave an unhappy workplace first? The best people, of course. Unhappy workplaces are left with only those people who cant get a job anywhere else (or with those who LIKE being unhappy :o) In fact its very simple: Many studies have shown that happy companies make more money than unhappy ones. As more and more companies focus on happiness, the happy companies will compete against the unhappy, and they will beat them in the market place simply because they are much more efficient. 6.You are telling that there is no need to complex formulas in order to be happy. Would you please share with us some simple ones? Happiness at work is not complex. We like to focus on the simple things that all of us can do right here and right now. Here are some examples: Take an interest in colleagues and employees Help each other. You may feel you dont have time, but the truth is that we dont have time to NOT help Praise. Whenever you have the chance, praise people. And remember: You dont have to be the boss to praise. You can praise your colleagues and yes, you can even praise your boss. And here is one thing that really helps, that all of us can do tomorrow: Do something nice for a colleague, an employee or for your manager. Just a small thing ? bring them a cup of coffee, write a nice email, anything. It will make them happy AND it will make you happy! And most of all, we must choose to be happy. If you yourself dont want to be happy at work, then nobody can force you. Each of us must choose for ourself and say, Yes, I want to be happy at work and I want to do something about it. 7.What could have been different in the world if world?s biggest companies practice ?Happy at Work Project?? I think people would overall be happier at work and in life and I these companies would be more efficient. Furthermore, happy people take more of an interest in the world around them, and this means that happy organizations do more good in the world. They do great business, but they also make a positive contribution to the world in other ways e.g. through charities or volunteer work. 8.Is it possible to practice ?Happy at Work Project? in public offices? In Turkey public workers are paid in the lowest salaries and they always complain about their jobs. Do you think your ?Happy at Work Project? could work in that situation? Absolutely. We have a similar situation here in Denmark ? public employees are paid less than the private sector, and we have found that these are some of the most receptive workplaces for our ideas. Public sector employees can be just as happy, provided that: 1.They want to be happy 2.They do something about it Remember: Happiness is not dependent on salary. 9.What are the topics that make bosses, top executives and leaders of companies unhappy mostly? Since in these positions quitting the job is harder than other positions, what they should do to be happy in their existing jobs? When leaders are unhappy, it is most often because they: Work too much Dont communicate well with other people in the organization Feel they cant achieve their goals I think the most important skill leaders can practice is empathy. Leaders must be able to listen to and understand people around them, or they wont be able to create good relations with the rest of the company. 10.Is it possible for someone to be happy at work while he/she is unhappy at home? In what ways professional life and private life affect each other? Professional and private life are closely connected and one affects the other. If youre unhappy in one area, it will affect the other. Many people who are unhappy in their private life find that being happy at work gives them strength, self-confidence and energy to carry on. Also, many of the tools we teach people can also be used outside of work, eg. with your spouse, children or friends. 11.You have travelled around the world. In which countries the happiest and the most unhappy workers are living, in your opinion? Scandinavia definitely has the happiest employees. This is because Scandinavian companies have a long tradition of focusing on how people feel at work. Its also interesting to notice, that there is a word for happiness at work in Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish ? but not in any other language (as far as I know). So the concept is so ingrained in Scandinavia, that we even have a word for it. 12. At which levels people are more unhappy than their co-workers? (Top level management, middle management, blue collars or others?) Typically top management is happiest, then middle management, etc This is interesting because management have more responsibilities and work more hours, so you might expect them to be more stressed and less happy. However, leaders also have more influence ? and that is the key thing: The more influence you have, the happier you are. Therefore its important to give employees influence over their own situation. Let them set their own working hours etc. 13.Are men or women more unhappy at their work places? Do you suggest the same happiness formulas to women and men, or are they different? I see very little difference between men and women when it comes to happiness at work, but there are a few ares that are relevant: Communication. Women are often better listeners and better at making social relations at work. This can make them happier than men. Pay. Take back politics - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Politics is too important to leave to politicians. Politics has become a threat to democracy. Distrust of politicians, cynicism, apathy and plummeting voter turnout are just some of the symptoms. We have created a situation where a very small fraction of the population formulate policies and the rest limit their participation to voting every 4 years or so. And its not working! We must create a political process that allows you and me anyone else who feels passionate about some issue to gain direct political influence. The tools exist: The internet, modern forms of organization, open source principles, meetup-meetings. And the advantage would be obvious: A nation in which people consider themselves an active part of society. Where you can proudly say I make a positive difference. Ive written a manifesto on a completely new approach to politics. It outlines an organization which is formally a political party and can function and run in elections like any other party, but which works internally unlike any other party on the face of the planet. Imagine a party where: Anyone can be a member regardless of their political position Policies are not decided top-down by a small group of political leaders but bottom-up by every member of the party The heroes are not the smoothest talkers but the best listeners The party platform is a wiki-site that anyone can edit just like Wikipedia Heterogeneous groups of people work together to create a bettter future for their society Were starting to do it right here in Denmark, and you can read the manifesto here.
